What hard drive should I use for backing up FinalCut media files?

Q: We currently have 3 LaCie d2 quadra (1TB) drives and would like to purchase 3 more for backup storage. Also, we were thinking about buying 2 RAID drives. What and who do you recommend? We will mostly use these drives to back up media files from our 2 FinalCut systems.

A: So, you'll want something with fast transfer speeds, large storage capacity (because those video files take up a lot of room) and something pretty safe/secure. Because you already have LaCie Hard Drives, I recommend you checkout the 4Big.

With burst transfer rates reaching up to 200-230MB/s* through eSATA 3Gbits, the 4big fits perfectly with most applications that demand high speed, such as photo, pre-press, AV projects, and even HD post-production. Compatible with Time Machine™, it also comes with Genie Backup Manager Pro™ and Intego Backup Manager Pro™, for customizable backup and computer recovery.

What I like about the LaCie 4Big is that it offers 7 different RAID modes from which the user can choose the best solution for himself or his organization. So if speed and capacity are your most important factors, for example you are using it for actively working with your video files, choose a RAID 0. If you're more concerned with security and speed, you might want to select RAID 3 + Spare or a RAID 5, which gives you constant access to your data, even in the event of a disk failure.

You can order LaCie 4Big hard drives in 4TB, 6TB and 8TB sizes from our Web site.
